Advent Devotionals – Printed and Electronic options

advent devotions
Clear some time from your advent days for devotions and prayer as we await the coming of the Christ of Christmas. A variety of devotion books for adults and families and colorful key fob prayer reminders are available at the information desk.

If electronic mail is a better choice for you try the God Pause daily devotions from Luther Seminary. God Pause are short, meaningful reflections on the following Sunday’s lessons and gospel. During Advent, God Pause devotions will be taken from “Awake, Awake and Greet the New Morn,” a daily devotional produced by Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary and Luther Seminary.

Redeemer Lutheran Christmas Store

Redeemer Lutheran Church’s Christmas Store event will take place on December 8, from 8:30 – Noon at Redeemer Lutheran Church. Zion is invited to participate by volunteering at the event or by donating gifts. There are many ways to contribute to the success of this event and they hope to match your passion for giving with our needs in providing a child the opportunity to give Christmas gifts to their loved ones.

This event gives them the opportunity to reach out to kids that are otherwise untouched by the ministry of Redeemer. The Christmas Store gives children a chance to buy four gifts for their family members and get them gift-wrapped for the price of twenty-five cents per gift!

The Christmas Store depends on the generosity of others willing to donate gifts, time and resources, so please consider participating in this event. There is a collection box in the narthex, and they especially need gifts for men and teens. Contact Babette Chapman of Redeemer Lutheran at 612.374.4139×16 or bchatman@redeemermpls.org if you have any questions.

December Scrapbooking

Since the regular December date falls the weekend just before Christmas, and many of you are probably either headed out of town already, or just way too busy that night.

Angela & Diane still want to meet, and we expect some of you may be needing to finish up Christmas gifts, so please let Angela know if you would be interested in scrapbooking on December 7 or December 14.

We will plan the date based on what works for the majority and let you know.

Tinsel & Tears

The Tinsel & Tears program will be held on Sunday, December 9th at 9:30 am in the Zion Library and is available to everyone, sponsored by Zion’s Stephen Ministry. Jean Fobbe, Wright County Human Services Resource Coordinator, will speak regarding the experiences of grief and stress during the holidays and give helpful suggestions on how to cope.

Holiday time can be a difficult time for many of as we deal with the loss of a loved one, as we grieve and suffer from loneliness, loss of a job, or other struggles in which we may develop mixed emotions and feelings of being overwhelmed. During this holiday season, think about how you can take care of yourself during this vulnerable time.

Baptism Class

With the start of the new year the pastoral staff will begin offering a class for new or prospective parents wishing to schedule a baptism at Zion. These classes will be offered on the first Saturday of every month beginning with January 5.

Anyone wishing to schedule a baptism is asked to attend a class prior to the date of the baptism. Expectant parents as well as those who already are parents may attend the class. Scheduling of baptisms will take place at the class.

Once parents have attended a class and had a child baptized, future baptisms in that family will not require attending an additional class.

Also, beginning in 2008, insofar as possible we will be trying to avoid communion Sundays for baptisms. This means that normally baptisms will take place on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. This is intended to keep the services as close to an hour in length as possible without sacrificing any of its components.

While exceptions are possible, baptisms will normally take place in the context of a worship service, rather than being held privately.

Classes will be at 9:30 am, please sign up online or call the office

Successful Lutefisk Dinner

Zion hosted 378 lutefisk “lovers” on Friday October 26 between 4:30 and 7:00 pm. Many volunteers signed up and contributed many hours in preparing for this event. I want to thank all those who contributed to make this a success. One of the joys of working on this event is being able to give the money earned to others. This year, money has been given to the Sunday School program, the youth, Redeemer Lutheran Church, needed supplies in the kitchen, and money has also been put aside to contribute to silverware in the kitchen. Once again, thanks to all

Rick Johnson, chairman
