The 2009 Lutefisk and meatball dinner is over for another year. Almost four hundred people enjoyed an evening of lutefisk, meatballs, potatoes, rutabagas, peas and dessert. Many positive comments were received on how good the lutefisk was.
This annual dinner brings people from all over the area to Zion. A special thanks goes out to all of the volunteers who donate their time year after year to make this event a success, the new people who volunteered this year for the first time, and youth who volunteered.
To keep the price from increasing and to satisfy those who never seem to get their fill of this delicacy, $1 contributions were collected for second helpings. The money raised from seconds went to the Buffalo Food Shelf and to others in need.
The money that is left after expenses will again be used in a number of ways:
Lastly, a portion of the proceeds will be supplemented by matching funds from Thrivent to help fund the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund to aid those in need.
Mark your calendars now for next October 29 – the 2010 Lutefisk and Meatball dinner.
Some of Pastor Ted’s thoughts on Zion’s mission statement at the Zionaires breakfast last Wednesday:
Zionaires had a great trip to the Science Museum in October to view and participate in the Titanic exhibit. In November they had a little breakfast and were one of the first groups to meet, listen to, and question Pastor Ted! It was very gratifying to see the large group of seniors that came to greet our new Pastor. They also had a handchime lesson from Sherilyn.
And the fun is just beginning! Future events include:
Other suggested activities that we hope to be doing in coming months include a tour of area churches, the Arboretum, Minnesota Zoo, Fort Snelling, and other places of interest.

Zion’s Annual Lutefisk Dinner will be on October 30th this year . . . get the full scoop & purchase tickets online
The Scandinavian delicacy known as lutefisk – which means, literally, “cod soaked in plutonium”- dates to the Viking era.
Journals from that era tell us that Vikings often came ashore and shuffled along with their hands in their pockets. Their funny appearance (huge, musk ox trousers) and vocabulary (“Whooaa! Like Svenjornssen, dude! Whooaaa!”) frightened the villagers.
So one day, women from the Jvoorssen, Bjaastivik and Njorkssen families prepared a special meal for the Vikings.
First, they gathered cod in the traditional Scandinavian way. That’s right, they wrapped their sturdy arms around the middle sections of seals Read the rest of this entry »
Zion’s annual golf outing on Homecoming Sunday, September 13, at Buffalo Heights Golf Course was attended by 28 golfers.
The team from the Huston & Morin families triumphed with a score of 31. Other winners were Larry Huston & Joell Morin with the longest drives, Scott Morin with the closest to the pin in 1 and in 2, and Rick Johnson with the longest putt.
The golf outing will be held on Homecoming Sunday again next September.
…Everyone is invited to come home to Zion on September 13 for a celebration of the new program year. Have you have been at the cabin for the summer? Are you are ready to give church another try. Are you thinking about visiting Zion for the first time?
What Is Homecoming Anyway…Homecoming is a celebration of this community of faith and a time to move back into the rhythms of worship, education, support, and service.

It‟s a relaxing way to spend an evening… meet friends, and make new friends at Zion. The movie room and /or gym could also be available for activities if there is a volunteer to supervise.
The Ice Cream Social at Marysville in June raised $924 toward restoration for the historic building. Thanks especially to all who donated pies, the confirmation students who volunteered, and the council members who took their turn in the dunk tank.

You can offer a few hours of time and make a big impact on families here at Zion. Wednesday night supper teams are welcoming new team members.
Can you help?
Families or individuals cook (it really is lightweight prep), serve, and clean up meals once every 6 weeks. Meals are served in a 6 week rotation giving each team the benefit of cooking the same meal each time they serve. You can choose which meal team you‟d like to join. Each team will be serving only 5 times during the entire year. Volunteer a few hours as a small commitment with a great reward for many people.
If you are willing to give time to help with this great outreach to Zion families and community members please contact Sherilyn Burgdorf in the church office, Cindy Bonde or Dorothy Valentine.
You‟ll benefit by meeting other Zion members that will become new friends and you‟ll also help many families and youth by providing a great “home-cooked” meal on busy Wednesday evenings.
The Wednesday night supper program at Zion has proven to be a great help for many people. Last year 4500 meals were served over a span of 30 Wednesdays throughout the year.
This year a sponsor program is being created to help underwrite the cost of the meals.
Each sponsor would be asked to donate $100 to help defray the Wednesday meal costs. The suggested donation of $3 per meal would continue each Wednesday but families and individuals who come to the Wednesday night suppers are welcomed even if they are unable to pay a full amount.
Does your employer encourage corporate sponsorships? Corporate sponsors would be asked to donate $100-200 in order to support families and individuals who come to the Wednesday night suppers but are unable to pay a full amount. Corporate sponsor might choose instead to donate a specific part of a meal, such as desert.
Both corporate and individual sponsors will have the option to have their names publicized.
If interested in the sponsorship program please contact Pastor Judy or Sherilyn Burgdorf at the Zion office or Wednesday Night Supper coordinators Cindy Bonde or Dorothy Valentine.
