Jon & Carrie Huston, Julia & Thomas

Jon Huston and Family

You may remember that Jon Huston, one of our 10:30 head ushers, was featured on Good Morning America last winter after he located and reunited with his Korean birth mother.

In July, Jon will be one of 23 Americans at a conference in Korea for 100 Korean adopteees from around the world.  This conference is an opportunity for adoptees to experience Korean culture, and is funded by the Korean government. Jon will also have an opportunity to spend some more time with his birth mom on the day’s he’s not at the conference.

Jake Swanson

On August 5th, Jake Swanson’s military service to his country officially ends.  He is moving back to Minnesota and will attend Ridgewater Community College in Hutchinson this fall.  I would like to thank my Zion family for their prayers and support, especially during his deployment to Afghanistan.  When asked by a former teacher what she could send him, he replied “You don’t have to send me anything but your prayers.  I know the only reason I am getting through this (the deployment) is because God has lifted me up and is carrying me.”  Your prayers do make a difference in the lives of these soldiers.  Please continue to pray for all of our military.

Witness To Our Faith

by Arnold Rude

Were we like the person mentioned in James 2:14b, “Though a man says he has faith and not works, can faith save him?” or were we a witness to our faith like the person mentioned in Proverbs 14:21, “A true witness delivers souls”?

How Did We Witness to Our Faith Today?

by Arnold Rude

Were we like the person mentioned in James 2:14b, “Though a man says he has faith and not works, can faith save him?” or were we a witness to our faith like the person mentioned in Proverbs 14:21 “A true witness delivers souls”?

A Christian layperson has a unique position as a worker and witness for Jesus Christ; having to spend our working day among our fellow men and women.  Here there is no effective pretense.  There for all to see, and our true, uncovered reaction to our work and its relationship to God.

To be a witnessing Christian in our daily life doesn’t mean Read the rest of this entry »

Help Fill the Canoe

CanoeAs their mission project this year, the VBS SonRock Kids’ Camp participants have started to collect supplies for military personnel overseas.

A complete list of suggested items can be found on the VBS page, and items should be brought to Zion by Sunday, June 21. They will then be be distributed amongst military personnel who have some congregational connection to Zion and the surrounding community.

And lastly in the words of Pastor Steve:

Homemade cookies/bars that are vacuum sealed or at least heavy duty zip locked are HUGE here. Thank you for doing this, you are going to make a lot of good people that you will never meet very happy.

Pastor Steve Svoboda in Iraq

Greetings from Northern Iraq.  Currently I am located in Kirkuk – a city of about 1,000,000 people.  So far I have been here just over one month, and have settled into the routine of life on a forward operating base.  Attached is a picture taken the other night of a co-worker/friend from my Minneapolis reserve wing, who is here doing security work.   He is a former Marine, now working for the Air Force and if there is a way to operate safely in a war zone, it is with him.  We went out the other night on mid-watch to visit troops on the perimeter.  The stuff in the picture that looks like snow is actually dust – it is very heavy here.  Also very dry and very hot.

Kirkuk0906We have a vibrant chapel culture here on base; I have responsibility for one of eight different service offerings here, working with the contemporary worship service at 1000 and 1900 every Sunday.  Between both services the contemporary serves 100-150 each week, and we have the best combat praise team in the CENTAF AOR.  We work very closely with our Army Chaplain counterparts and have a great relationship with them.

Zion‟s website now has a page of prayer resources, prayer requests, and prayer forums where you can share your prayers and prayer needs, or read and pray for the needs of others. Prayer requests can be directed to the prayer chain, pastors, staff meetings, worship services, and/or posted publicly. . . www.ZionBuffalo.org/Prayer.

God Pause devotions are also available from the Prayer Ministries page.  They are short, meaningful reflections  on the following Sunday’s lessons and gospel written by Luther Seminary alumni/ae. By Sunday, you’ll be ready for an extra meaningful worship experience.

10 Years From Now

In the monthly newsletter, we often include a look back in the the history of the congregation.  In June 2009 we are looking back 10 years to what was happening in June and July of 1999.

An anonymous contributor has also provided a look forward 10 years and some  ‘predictions’ for 2019:

  • Celebration Sunday, June 16th, will celebrate the final payment on Zion‟s mortgage! This will free up $216,000 annually for additional ministry at Zion. Thanks be to God!
  • God‟s Angels held their semi-annual automobile diagnosis and maintenance day. 23 vehicles were serviced for those who are on government assistance and either had jobs or were seeking work.
  • The 4th Annual Blessing of the Golf Balls tournament raised $3,100 for the homeless youth shelter in Maple Lake.
  • Zion hosted 8 delegates from our sister church in Nigeria. Along with an update on the new school our two churches have jointly built, the delegates led three adult forums at Zion on evangelizing the unchurched.
  • The Senior Pastor‟s 10th anniversary at Zion was celebrated with barbeque on the lawn.
  • The Personnel Committee is finalizing the job description for a staff social worker to work closely with the school district, hospital and Wright County for settling newly arrived immigrants in the Buffalo area.
  • The audio-visual system in the sanctuary was upgraded through a generous donation to the Memorial Fund.

Dirk Foster

Things continue to go well in my job as the Chief of Staff for NSWC PHD. My day is filled with ensuring that the staff runs smoothly. I mainly work with the non-technical side of the business. This Friday afternoon was very busy. One employee was warned that he had to evacuate his home in 15 minutes because of the Santa Barbara fires. He eventually did not have to evacuate but it was close. Then a small earthquake struck about 20 miles away. No damage or injuries, but many people felt it. Finally, the ambulance and fire truck showed up because one of our employees was having chest pains. He was taken to the hospital and released the next day.

I am working on deconflicting two groups that were promised the same building for expansion, answering an OSHA complaint, getting performance evaluations in on time and improving the Commanding Officers suggestion box process. I have also emceed an awards ceremony, scheduled training for the staff and am working on developing a strategic alignment with an engineering program at one of the University of California campuses.

I really like my job, the commanding officer is great to work for and all of the people have been wonderful. I do miss everyone at home. I hope they are getting ready for a great summer and I look forward to seeing as many people as possible over the 4th of July weekend.

A big thank you and well done to all the Zion members & friends, including directors Tracy Hagstrom Durant and Michael Walsh, who made the musical “Les Miserables“  at the high school last weekend such a smash.

Many Zion members remarked at what great entertainment it was and how much they appreciated all the hard work of everyone connected to the performances!

Thanks for sharing your gifts from God with the community!
