Meals on Wheels

Drivers are still needed for Saturday and Sunday, contact Sherilyn ASAP if you can help :)

Can You Host a Choir Student?

Zion needs to provide housing for students from the Minnesota All-State Lutheran Choir after their concert at Zion on June 24.

Hosts need to house at least two students together and students will depart the following morning around 9am. Some students have pet/smoke allergies, so let us know if your home would be suitable for those students.

Contact Sherilyn to volunteer.

Also contact Sherilyn if you can help provide supper for the choir before the concert, or would like to help sponsor the concert.

Church Geeks

JSP? CSS? Ubuntu? . . .If that means anything to you, you might be able to help with one of several small computer projects in the church office:

  • Tweak scripts used to integrate calendar widgets into Zion‟s website so that they show the needed information and are formatted appropriately.
  • Tweak CSS used on Zion‟s website and email newsletters to fix some layout issues.
  • Set up two Ubuntu internet kiosks (in the library and narthex) for members and visitors to the building to access the internet.

Please contact Angela if you can help.

Garden Spots Available

A few God’s Garndener garden spaces are left for new volunteers. Please contact the church office for information if you are interested in tending a small garden space at Zion for the summer.

Proofreaders

If you would be willing to occasionally proofread church publications before printing, please contact Angela.

The timeframe is often short or overnight and the materials would be sent to you as a link to a PDF without the expectation that it would fit your schedule every time.

Got Photos? Videos? And a Video Contest!

The office frequently needs photos for publications and you can help.

Consider taking more photos at church, even when it is not a special event.

When you do get great photos, please share some of them:

Photos are the greatest need, but also consider sharing any Zion videos too via YouTube (send the office a link) or Facebook.

By the way, the ELCA is inviting members and the general public to submit their videos to a contest inspired by our tagline: “God’s work. Our hands.” Prizes include a $5,000 ministry grant for  congregations or a $2,500 cash prize for individuals.

Consider Delivering Meals on Wheels

Zion’s turn at delivering Meals on Wheels begins on Monday, June 1. We will need 3 drivers each day of June. The task includes picking up a route of meals at Lake Ridge Care Center (formerly Ebenezer) at 11:45 and delivering in the Buffalo area.

You can see which days still need volunteers at zionbuffalo.org/mow (it is manually updated, so your name will not show up immediately)

Summer Musicians Needed

Use your talents this summer to provide special music for one of our summer worship services on Sunday mornings. Instrumentalists, pianists, vocalists, groups or solos… you are invited!

Interested in Monday nights at Marysville? There’s a special music spot for you there too!

Contact Sherilyn Burgdorf or Mike Walsh to volunteer.

Cemetery Cleanup

The spring cleanup date for Zion Cemetery, south of the church on Highway 25 is Monday, April 27 at 6pm.

Bring rakes, shovels, etc. In the case of rain on the 5th, the cleanup will be rescheduled to April 28.

Spring Fever Anyone?

God’s Gardeners:

All the garden areas looked great in 2008, and many visitors and members of Zion enjoyed the colorful greeting.

Gardeners, it‟s time to start thinking about planting your garden spaces for this year, keep an eye open for upcoming information for 2009 season.

If you have a new interest in God’s Gardeners please call the office for contact information.

Homebound Communion Visitors

Did you know that each first Sunday of the month Zion members visit those who are homebound to bring communion after worship? These visits serve as a way to “carry the worship service” out of Zion‟s doors and into the homes of some of our members who cannot get to church on Sunday mornings. We thank those who have served or continue to serve each month as visitors: Cindy Bonde, Howard Burgdorf, Jill Hanson, Carol Krause, Sam Monson, Carol Nusbaum, Kathy Swanson.

A training session for all who are interested in becoming homebound communion visitors will be held in April. Interested? Call the church office or contact Pastor Judy or Sherilyn Burgdorf.

Nursery Volunteers

childcreEven though you are a distance away from the sanctuary during worship you are providing important leadership by caring for young children and infants. Parenting can be stressful and when parents of young children come to worship they may not be able to concentrate on parenting and worshipping at the same time.

Your hands become the hands of Christ as you care for the children while parents are away.

Greeters

Greeters
You are one of the first people that members and visitors see when they come to Zion. You welcome people who consider Zion their home church and also those who are visiting or considering Zion as a new “home”. You see to their needs. If people are unfamiliar with the building you are the ones who will direct them to the nursery, bathrooms, water fountains and other needs during the time they’re at Zion. Go out of your way to greet and meet people. Even when you are not on duty as a greeter we encourage you to take time to learn the names of those you meet at Zion, taking an interest in the community at Zion.

Altar Guild Members

commun_4950Lutherans have two sacraments: baptism and communion. Preparing the elements of communion is a behind the scenes task that is one of the most significant needs for worship. Since communion is celebrated at least two times each month at Zion many people are needed to prepare the communion elements and bring them to the altar before worship. The altar guild “sets the table” for the holy meal of communion when they fill the cups with wine and when they fill the patens (communion dishes) with wafers or bread. They also take special care in clearing and storing the communion ware after worship has ended.

There is preparation that is needed before worship begins, especially on communion Sundays. The time and care given by the altar guild makes it possible for the whole congregation to join around the altar table as one body to receive holy communion.

Coffee Fellowship Hosts

rt3804gWhen someone comes to your home one of the first questions asked is “Can I get you something? We share a cup of coffee or a treat as an act of hospitality. The fellowship time that surrounds the worship services on Sunday morning creates a time of sharing and conversation. The people who sat across from each other in the next pew hearing the stories of Jesus feeding the 5000 or Jesus sharing a meal with his disciples can now sit together and share their own stories. Zion has a wonderful fellowship hall centrally located and ready for conversation. Coffee hosts prepare the space for conversation and coffee: one of the best acts of hospitality especially in a Lutheran church!

Lectors

wi0660biLectors are often called assisting ministers. Reading scripture and leading prayers during a worship service is not a ministry reserved only for pastors. Worship is the work of the people, the body of Christ who meet together for praise, prayer, and sacraments.

God‘s word and God‘s presence among us is being proclaimed when a lector reads the scripture lessons. Whether it‘s a word of praise, of lament, of trust, or forgiveness depends on the designated scripture for a particular day.

When reading, lectors give the word of God special care and attention. A lector is the cradle, holding the word of God that comes among us when we worship. When lectors read the scripture or lead prayers with care and devotion, even a child or a stranger can know that something profound is happening.

Communion Servers

untitled-1Those who serve communion are crucial members of the entire communion team who volunteer on the 3rd and 5th Sunday of each month. Between 10-12 people are needed each communion Sunday when intinction (dipping the wafer into the wine in the chalice) is used. In a small congregation the pastor and another worship leader can serve communion together and still maintain the flow of the worship service. In a congregation of our larger size the service is better suited to having communion available at more stations, reaching many people at the same time. Once the pastor has spoken the words of institution over the bread and the wine, the words “The body of Christ, given for you” and “The blood of Christ, shed for you” need to be heard by all. Seeing people of various ages, men and women, new members and long standing members all volunteering as communion servers reminds us once again that even though the body of Christ has many members there is only one mission.
