Wear Red for Pentecost

PentecostMay 31 is the Feast of Pentecost, celebrating the coming of the Holy Spirit to the followers of Jesus. Red is the color of the day as it represents the fire of God’s Spirit. Please remember to wear red to worship next Sunday. Let’s see if we can have a sea of red (or red tones) fill the sanctuary!

The ELCA has some great information about the meaning and use of liturgical colors on their website.

The Blessings of Zion’s Day of Prayer

“I love this church.  God is here!”

“I found this day of prayer time to be both a powerful and moving experience.”

“Such a blessing.  So unifying.”

These are some of the comments made by participants of our recent Zion Day of Prayer.  Thanks to all who prayed for our congregation at church, at home or on the road.  We wait with enthusiasm as the Holy Spirit responds to and through us.  If you were unable to participate, devotional materials are still available at the church or online.  God bless us as we continue to seek His guidance.

Minnesota All-State Lutheran Choir at Zion

The Minnesota All-State Lutheran Choir is including a concert at Zion in their tour itinerary.

Each year high school students all over the state audition for the 40-65 voice choir. In June, the choir assembles [to] participate in eight days of rehearsal, Bible study and discussion concerning the meaning of the texts they will be singing on the tour.

The concert will be on June 24 at 7:30pm in the Sanctuary. A free-will offering will be collected during intermission.

Zion needs to provide supper for the choir before the concert.  Zion also needs to provide housing for the choir, including some with pet/smoke allergies.  Hosts need to house at least two students.  Students will depart the following morning around 9am.

The up-front cost of this concert is not a budgeted item, but could be covered by five individuals or families that would provide sponsorship of $50 (smaller sponsorship amounts are also welcome).

If you can help provide supper, host students, or would like to help sponsor this concert, please contact Sherilyn.MASLC

Pastor Mortvedt Preaching May 24

The Rev. Bob Mortvedt will be recognized on May 24th for 45 years of ordained ministry. He was ordained on May 27, 1965 upon graduation from Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary.

  • St. James Lutheran Church, Redding CA
  • Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, Simi Valley CA
  • Reformation Lutheran Church, Westminster CA
  • St. Johns Lutheran Church, Beatrice NE

Handbell and Choir Concert at Zion

The wRight Ringers Community Handbells and the Wright County Chamber Chorus will be performing a concert at Zion on Sunday, April 19 at 7:30pm.

The Wright County Chamber Chorus is directed by Mike Walsh (you may know him better as the director of Zion’s Senior Choir), and the wRight Ringers are directed by Jill Starr and Sherilyn Burgdorf.

What is the Brief Order for Healing?

The Brief Order for Healing may be used in a variety of circumstances in the church’s ministry of care. Those who sense the need for God’s healing in any aspect of their lives may receive the gifts of prayer and of the laying on of hands. This sign, first given in baptism, tell us again that we are sealed by the Holy Spirit and marked forever with the cross of Christ, who is health and salvation for the whole world.

In its ministry of healing, the church does not replace the gifts of God that come through the scientific community, nor does it promise a cure. The church offers and celebrates gifts such as these: God’s presence with strength and comfort in time of suffering, God’s promise of wholeness and peace, and God’s love embodied in the community of faith.

Zion’s Maundy Thursday worship services on April 9 at Noon and 6:30pm will include the Brief Order for Healing.

“Jerusalem, My Happy Home”

Sherilyn Burgdorf

Sherilyn Burgdorf

Not many can say that they have had a piece of music commissioned in their honor! Last fall, Sherilyn Burgdorf received just such a gift from her husband.

Jerusalem, My Happy Home was “Comissioned by Andrew Burdgorf in honor of his wife Sherilyn’s fiftieth birthday and the Handbell Choirs of Zion Lutheran Church and the wRight Ringers Community Handbell Ensemble, Buffalo, Minnesota, Sherilyn Burgdorf, Director” and arranged by Cathy Moklebust.

Andy, along with Sherilyn’s friend Jill Starr, went to great lengths to keep the commissioning of this piece a secret until the big day. One day Andy was on his way to Jill’s home on his bike to pick up one of the drafts when he met Sherilyn on the road . . . So instead of turning onto Jill’s street he kept going and did a loop around the block to avoid suspicion.

We thank those who have served or continue to serve each month as visitors: Cindy Bonde, Howard Burgdorf, Jill Hanson, Carol Krause, Sam Monson, Carol Nusbaum, Kathy Swanson.

A training session for all who are interested in becoming homebound communion visitors will be held in April. Interested? Call the church office or contact Pastor Judy or Sherilyn Burgdorf.
