Pastor Kelly Chatman to Preach at Zion

Myron, Pastor Chatman, Jim

Pastor Kelly Chatman of Redeemer Lutheran Church with Myron Crawford and Jim Onstad of Zion at the Soul Food Dinner last weekend.

Redeemer Lutheran Church and Zion have been partner churches for a number of years. During that time many of Zion’s members have attended and participated in worship services at Redeemer, members of Zion have attended Redeemer’s annual block parties and soul food dinners, Pastor Becky preached at Redeemer, Redeemer’s choir sang at Zion, Zion’s youth have been involved with projects at Redeemer, and Pastor Kelly Chatman has preached at Zion.

Pastor Kelly Chatman will be preaching at Zion again this Sunday, November 1, at the 8:30 and 10:30 services. Pastor Kelly will be joined by two musicians from Redeemer who will provide special music at the 8:30 and 10:30 services and help Myron lead the 9:45 service. Pastor Judy will be preaching at Redeemer.

Service of Remembrance

Honoring Loved Ones who have Died

Zion’s annual “Service of Remembrance” will be held on Sunday afternoon, November 1, “All Saints’ Sunday”, at 4:00 pm in the Sanctuary. Everyone is invited to take this time to honor our loved ones who have died in the past year or previous years.

During the service the names of our loved ones will be read, and you will have the opportunity to light a candle in honor of them. The service will also include hymns, prayers, scripture readings, and a brief meditation.

Ecumenical Thanksgiving Eve Worship

pilgrimsThe annual Ecumenical Festival of Thanksgiving and Praise will take place at Zion on Wednesday, November 25 at 8:00pm. Invite your neighbors and friends to attend this service of thanks that brings our community together. This is truly a faith-filled experience for all families.

Pastors from the Buffalo area churches join to give leadership to this community-wide time of worship. Choirs from many of the churches in Buffalo will combine to present anthems of thanks and praise. The handbell choirs from Zion, Buffalo Covenant, St. Johns Lutheran, and Buffalo United Methodist churches are preparing pieces to be rung in a massed choir. There will be over 130 musicians from different churches.

Nursery is provided, and offerings are used to help those in need through the Buffalo Ministerial Association.

Consider Ushering at Zion

Take time for a few weeks of ushering. Ushers at the 10:30 worship are especially needed.

Ushers come about 20-30 minutes before worship begins to hand out bulletins, help with the offering plates during offering, and direct people to communion on the 1st, 3rd, and 5th Sundays. Ushers can be adults and youth, men and women. After worship the ushers take a quick check through the pews to collect the extra bulletins and then their job is done for the day.

Volunteers are usually asked to help for a month, knowing that there may be a Sunday that would be a “vacation” day due to other plans.

Please consider helping especially during November, December, or January with this Sunday morning task. It’s a very important one! Contact Sherilyn Burgdorf at sburgdorf@ZionBuffalo.org or call 682.1245 ext. 307.

Scrooge in Bethlehem

‘A Christmas Carol in Bethlehem’ is an adaptation of Dicken’s story that places Scrooge in Bethlehem at the birth of Christ. This will be performed during worship on December 27 at 8:30 and 10:30. Mark your calendars to enjoy the Christmas story retold in the eyes of Scrooge,Tiny Tim and the Cratchits.

Barbary Coast Dixieland Band Services on November 8

Barbary Coast Dixieland Band

Barbary Coast Dixieland Band

The Barbary Coast Dixieland Band will be with us again this year on November 8, as they have for the past several years.

The Barbary Coast Band started playing together as a banjo band leading group singing at a peanut and beer shack in 1967, and have lead worship services of different denominations throughout the area since 1984.

This been a very popular and well attended worship experience at Zion.

They will participate in both the 8:30 and 10:30 services. Please come early and enjoy this unique worship opportunity.

Be a Bus Booster!

Bus connections from Buffalo schools to Zion have changed this fall. There is no longer an option for alternate destination for choirs, etc. from Buffalo schools because the busses are already very crowded. Zion now rents a bus for students from Buffalo elementary schools to ride to Zion on Wednesdays.

You can help! Contributions, large and small all add up. $50 will provide one week of bus service for the 40+ students that are already riding the bus to elementary choirs, bell choirs, and Kids’ Club.

Contact Sherilyn or give online at ZionBuffalo.org/Transportation.

Handbell Concert in Waconia

Twin Cities Bronze, professional Hand Bell Ensemble from the metropolitan area, will be celebrating ten years of Musical Artistry in an energetic music concert on Sunday, September 20, at 2:00 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church, 601 E.2nd St., Waconia. Freewill offering and refreshments to follow.

Another After-School Transportation Update

Arrangements are being made to rent a bus for students from Buffalo elementary schools to Zion on Wednesdays.  Parents would be asked to give a suggested donation of $40/family per year, which is approximately $1.50 a week… less than the price of gas to drive.  The same bus will bring students from Tatanka, Northwinds, Parkside, and Discovery to Zion for SONshine Choir (switching to Wednesdays), Joy Choir, Ring Forth, and Kids’ Club. Parents still have the option to drive their children to Zion.

Sign up information for the bus will be available soon at ZionBuffalo.org/Transportation.

After School Transportation Update

The bus company has just told us that the bus connections that we’ve been able to use directly from the schools for the past years are unavailable this fall. There will be no option for alternate destination for choirs, etc. from the grade schools, the middle school, or the high school because busses are already very crowded and there wouldn’t be room for more Zion students.

Alternatives that we are considering are outlined here.

Thanks Joshua!

First Sunday would like to thank Joshua Neal for his faithful drumming over the last several years; he was greatly appreciated and will be missed. They welcome Kevin Brainered as their are in search of a new drummer.

First Sunday’s new rehearsal day and time for the upcoming school year is Wednesdays from 6:00 to 6:55pm. They meet in the sanctuary and would welcome new musicians. If you are a KTIS 98.5 listener you will already know all of their songs!

Make this a great year by adding your tunes to a choir. Vocal and handbell choirs are available for all ages and will be starting up again in September:
