Many members of the congregation are currently reading the book Power Surge, written by Pastor Foss when he was serving as senior pastor of Prince of Peace in Burnsville, Minnesota. Pastor Foss now serves at St. Mark Lutheran Church in West Des Moines, Iowa, and will be joining us at Zion on September 26 for two special events.

In the morning, Pastor Foss will be preaching at each worship service. His sermon will focus on the gifts and resources already present in the Zion community. The 8:30 and 10:30 services will also include special music from the Senior Choir, Joyful Ringers, and the Jubilee Worship Team.

In the evening, Pastor Foss will be the guest speaker at the first of five congregational gatherings that will help reveal the gifts, interests and passions of the people of Zion in preparation for the work of the Visioning Task Force in 2011. Additional congregational gatherings will be held in October, and all members are encouraged to participate in one of them.

• Able to work with others on special projects.

Parents, did you notice there’s room for you, too? All are welcome! Child care is available on Wednesday evenings during rehearsals.

Most adult choirs will begin in early September, and most youth choirs will begin the week of September 12. Registration will be available online later in August and on Homecoming Sunday, September 12.

The event was sponsored by Zion Lutheran Church of Buffalo and Redeemer Lutheran Church of North Minneapolis, who are partners together in mission.

Between sets from the massed choir, the “Redeemer Jump Crew”, from Redeemer Lutheran Church energized the crowd with some spirited hip-hop music. A smaller gospel ensemble also performed and both Pastor Kelly Chatman of Redeemer Lutheran Church, and Pastor Ted Vanderpan of Zion Lutheran Church spoke briefly.

The evening ended with gospel singer Robert Robinson, well known singer and director of the Twin Cities Gospel Choir, joining the massed choir as a soloist and finally leading the massed choir and audience in “This Little Light of Mine.”

The evening will also include various small groups, and accomplished band members. The event will also include a praise and worship element, hip hop ministry presentations and a pastoral message.

Inclement weather location is the Zion sanctuary, just south of Sturges Park on Highway 25.

The festival is a collaborative effort between Zion Lutheran in Buffalo and Redeemer Lutheran in Minneapolis bringing together multiple congregations and the entire community to form a gospel choir under the direction of Lisa Olson, former pianist for the Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir for twelve years.

Tonight’s rehearsal is at 7pm at Zion. There will be another rehearsal next week in Buffalo, and there are also some rehearsal options in Minneapolis. All are welcome (you do not need to be involved with one of the sponsoring congregations)!

BBQ sandwiches and root beer floats will be served. Free-will donations to cover the cost will be accepted.

The worship service led by youth director Myron Crawford will include some Gospel music, and will last about a half-hour.

Adult Education Program at 7pm:How Christians Worship:

Christians worship with a wide variety of styles. Have you ever heard of snake handlers in worship? Have you ever wondered where the phrase “holy rollers” comes from? Do you know who the “liturgical police” are? All of these things have something to do with Christian worship. Pastor Ted will lead an adult education session on “Make A joyful Noise – How Christians Worship.” We will look at historical, generational, and ethnic trends in Christian worship and have an opportunity to reflect on our own preferences for worship.

Senior High Graceland at 7pm – Music: What Are You Listening To?

Gather with other students entering grades 9-12 to discuss the power of our choices, even in music.

Family Activity at 7pm

S’mores and camp songs led by Roxie down by the lake for young children and children at heart.

Harvest of Hands at 7pm

The HOH craft group will work on a bead project.

For those of you who have never attended a historic Marysville service, this is the perfect opportunity to give it a try.

The Swedesburg (AKA Marysville) Church was organized by Pastor Nelson in February 1873. The same pastors served the Swedesburg and Carlslund (later know as Zion) congregations until Swedesburg disbanded in 1950 and the members joined Zion. In 1973 the building was restored to celebrate the centennial of Swedesburg, and Monday evening summer services commenced at that time.

Marysville is just a short 10-15 minute drive from downtown Buffalo. From the stoplights by the courthouse/library, head west on Lake Blvd N/CR 35. After 3 miles turn left and follow CR 35/CR 9. After 1.8 miles turn left and continue on CR 9. Marysville is a further 2.5 miles on the right. Remember that this is a little country church with no modern amenities.

Since the concert is in Sturges Park you’re invited to bring a picnic, your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy a night of great music at the bandshell. We may also have vendors at the park selling treats during the concert. Put the date on your calendar and invite your neighbors and friends for a great event.

Gospel music is the core unifying thread and will be presented by a mass choir, various small groups, and accomplished band members. The event will also include a praise and worship element, hip hop ministry presentations and a pastoral message.

Come and join a gospel choir that’s being formed especially in preparation for this event! Led by Lisa Olson, former pianist for the Twin Cities Community Gospel Choir for twelve years, there will be spirited rehearsals held right in Buffalo as well as Minneapolis.

All ages of gospel fans from the community are welcomed to come and be a part of the mass choir. Scored music with parts will be provided, but songs will be taught so that non-readers of all ages can still fully participate.

On May 8 the Zion Senior Choir and Joyful Ringers worked with Doug Geston from Westmark Productions in Golden Valley to record tracks for a CD.

The challenge of making music that goes further than a three minute contribution to worship takes time and lots of concentration. Four hours of recording time will come together to produce a good variety of the favorites from Senior Choir and Joyful Ringers.

The CD will be available this summer. Cost is $15, checks payable to Zion Lutheran. Reserve a copy of the CD at the information desk or on the Zion website.

The first Marysville service for this year will be on Monday, June 7, beginning at 7pm.

There will be half-hour prayer services in the Zion library/chapel on Thursday, May 6, at 6:30am, 10am, and 7pm. The 10am prayer service will be followed by a time of fellowship and coffee.

This year the focus of our prayer will be our church families, sharing our gifts, our country, especially those in the armed services, and world peace. By dedicating a half hour of our time, we can lay these issues at God’s feet, confident that he will provide for our needs.

Those not able to attend a prayer service at Zion are encouraged to participate at home or at work, and devotional materials will be provided.

The First Sunday Praise and Worship Team introduces each new month by leading the congregation with popular and easy to sing songs. The majority of their songs can be heard on KTIS 98.5, which many team members listen to daily.

“First Sunday is a small but powerful group,” explains member Sue Lyrek. “We like to search [for] and sing songs not for performance, but for our souls and feelings. We try to listen to the group and make decisions together. We all have opinions, but we know that God wants us to be here for Zion.”

The thirteen members range from high school students to parents of high school students. First Sunday practices for an hour every Wednesday evening where they focus on songs with easy to sing notes, simple melody lines, and uncomplicated rhythms.

“I joined First Sunday because I really wanted to do something that was out-of-the-box for me,” says team member Carol Clark. “I love all kinds of Christian music- the more traditional stuff we sing in Senior Choir during first service, and the stuff they play all day long on KTIS. When I joined [First Sunday], I had never really played anything like we play. I love that I had to step way out of my comfort zone and learn to play a different way, after playing from written music for over thirty- five years.”

Before every worship service, the group gathers in a circle and Sue Lyrek leads them in prayer.

“I like to pray before we perform to help us get out minds together,” she explains, “and to help God see where we are hurting and how He can help. It makes us feel more like family and we help each other out by praying for what comes to us. That way we can let our light out from within and it can shine out to the congregation, so when they leave they can feel it, too.”
