The funeral will be at Zion on Tuesday, August 2 at 11am. There will be visitation on Monday, August, 1 at Peterson Chapel from 4-8pm.

For a few days during the transition, both sites might be operating, and some links might not function as expected.

When the transition is complete, the new site will be available at the existing home address, www.ZionBuffalo.org.

Volunteers prep, serve, and clean up meals once every 6 weeks. Meals are served in a 6 week rotation giving each team the benefit of cooking the same meal each time they serve.

You’ll benefit by meeting other Zion members that will become new friends and you’ll also help many families and youth by providing a great “home-cooked” meal on busy Wednesday evenings.

Zion provided the first free breakfast last September and other groups followed on the 3rd Saturday of each month over the last year, serving over 2000 residents.  It is Zion’s turn again to serve a community meal. Volunteers are needed on  Saturday, September 17, from 7-11am. Sign up at the information desk.

In the second year of this program, a quarterly free evening meal at the Community Center is also planned.

Each night, there will be a meal, worship, games, and/or study. This program is open to all students who will be in grades 9-12 in the fall 2011. Each night will have a different theme, so come prepared with a Bible and notebook.

Thank you so much to those of you who have already agreed to share your time and talents with Zion’s Sunday School children this fall. We are excited for the opportunity to work with you in teaching all of our kids about our loving and eternal God.

Wednesday is choir day at Zion with bussing provided for Ring Forth, SONshine Choir, and Joy Choir after school for elementary students from Parkside, Discovery, Tatanka, Northwinds, and St. Francis schools. Middle school handbell ringers come by carpool from BCMS after school, and Youth Choir meets right before Wednesday night confirmation classes.

Parents, did you notice there’s room for you, too? All are welcome! Child care is available on Wednesday evenings during rehearsals.

Adult choirs will begin in early September, and most children/youth choirs will begin the week of September 12.

Remember that Wednesday night suppers are available weekly for all families. A freewill donation is encouraged to cover meal costs.

Registration for all choirs will be available online in mid-August and at Zion on Homecoming Sunday, September 11.

The annual Homecoming Sunday Carnival is fun for the whole family  with inflatable jumpies, face painting, crazy hair, temporary tattoos, games, cotton candy, and more. It all happens on the front lawn from 11:45am until … well … until it ends

Pop Can Earrings

When you think of pop cans where do your thoughts travel? Your thoughts might travel to a refreshing drink in the hot weather. When HOH thinks of pop cans, they think of their next project. In August, they will use pop cans to make earrings at Wednesday evening craft sessions. Newcomers are welcome to join the group to see these amazing earrings … you would never know they are made from a pop can.

Other projects will include bird feeders, wind chimes, and continue working on rugs at Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening sessions.

What Can I do?

• Create crafts at home or  with one of the craft groups at Zion
• Help distribute flyers
• Donate grocery items for egg rolls, cookies, brunch, etc.
• Help make egg rolls, cookies, or brunch
• Donate white elephants, a silent auction item, jellies, salsas, etc. for the festival
• Work at the festival on November 5
• Help set-up or clean-up after the festival
• Coordinate an area or project for the festival

Zion Youth are looking for people/students to help run sound and video on Wednesday nights for Confirmation and other events.

But it’s not that simple – is it? The truth is that those cookies can’t give us what we really want or need. They’re made of the wrong stuff. A cookie can fill but it doesn’t nourish. A cookie can put on weight around your middle but it will not make you strong.  A cookie will give you quick energy but it won’t give you stamina for the whole afternoon.

Isn’t it the same when it comes to faith?  Knowing “about” Jesus isn’t the same as “knowing” Jesus, walking with him, trusting in him. Knowing about him is kind of like eating a cookie – it isn’t what we really want or need. What we really want is to know Jesus – to talk with him, to understand his words, to experience his forgiveness, to rest in his love, to put our lives in his hands and know that he will sustain us.  Millions of people around the world, this very day, call Jesus Savior because he has “nourished” them, given them “strength” to face difficulties, and “sustained” them through the ups and downs of life. That is why women, men, and youth through out the ages have knelt down with gratitude to Jesus who has given them what the world simply cannot give.

What this boils down to (just like lunch) is a choice – a choice to know Jesus from a distance or to have a real-life encounter with him. Take time to eat that which truly satisfies. Take time for your soul to be nourished. Take time to be strengthened for life. Take time to be sustained through whatever life brings. No, I’m not talking about eating a cookie. It is Jesus who can give us what we really want and need.

As the summer winds down it is a great time to invite someone to come to church and hear of Jesus – the bread of life. People are looking for sustenance in life, for something that nourishes their soul and strengthens their life. Jesus is just what they’re looking for.
